Early Admissions Update

With the Holiday Season upon us, so is the early admissions notification season. Students have begun receiving many acceptances, academic scholarships, financial aid packages, and students are finally starting to see themselves at one or two specific colleges…reality is beginning to set in! A percentage of students have even been accepted to their Early Decision (binding) school and now know where they will be attending in the fall of 2018...how exciting!

However, even though there are a ton of good things happening now, many students also received unpleasant decisions from colleges in the early round with either denials or deferrals. From my desk, the trend continues of schools becoming more and more difficult to get into, even for the most accomplished students. With more young men and women applying to college within our country and across the world, many college application numbers continue to go through the roof, meaning more students will be denied or deferred than ever before.

In addition to colleges being blessed with more students applying to higher education in general, the business of college has become increasingly focused on creating ways to bring in applications. Different marketing approaches have made the popular colleges even more popular, and have put the less known schools on the radar for many students. My hope is that students and parents understand this, in order to not get too disappointed if they do not hear positive news from every school! Many schools that would have been a target for a particular student may very well be a reach school now. The need to find schools that students are very likely to get into, and are happy with, is more important than ever in today’s world of college admissions.

To get a glimpse into what I am talking about, I have information on a few schools' admissions numbers from this year's early application round, that I want to show everyone:

Boston College: BC continued the trend from last year, and increased their Early Action applications by 15%, receiving a record 10,000 completed applications. With an average SAT of 1450 and ACT of 33.25, this was BC's most competitive applicant pool in history. Only 32% of the very talented group was accepted. Generally, it can be a bit "easier" to get accepted into Boston College through Regular Decision.

Washington U. Saint Louis: One of the country's leading universities became even more popular, with an Early Decision (binding) applicant increase of 2%, as they received 1,850 ED apps. Wash U. decided to admit 40% of their incoming class through ED this year, as opposed to their usual 36% in the past. So future students interested in this school, may want to heavily consider ED as an option to help their chances of admission at Wash U.

Providence College: Man, PC's popularity continues to rise across the country. With a brand new business school headquarters, the applications have steadily gone up each year to PC, and this year was no different. Providence saw an increase of 6.3% in their Early Action & Early Decision numbers with 6,784 applications. PC posted a 54% acceptance rate for their early pool, which is a little higher than their Regular Decision acceptance rate, which is usually around 50%.

Georgetown University: This year, Georgetown stay at a 12% admit rate for their Early Action pool, but saw an increase of 600 applications. With a middle 50% on the SAT of 1430-1560 and ACT of 32-35, there were definitely some very bright students disappointed with their results. Specifically, their McDonough School of Business admitted 175 students out of 1,254 applicants (14%) and the Georgetown College admitted 539 students out of 4,760 applicants (11%). As Georgetown tries to read applications the same in Early Admissions compared to Regular Decision, you can expect the numbers to look similar in a few months.

Hopefully this gives some perspective to students and parents out there who were disappointed with the early round results. It is definitely competitive out there, but keep your head up…as long as you put effort into this process, you will end up at the right school; and as always, happy searching!
