College Spotlight: Bocconi University

Two weeks ago, I was fortunate enough to be given the opportunity to visit Bocconi University in Milan, Italy. To ensure I stay on top of the world of college admissions, I often visit universities across the country, but this was my first ever international college trip. International college admissions has been increasing in the United States in recent years, and after this trip, I began to truly understand why this was happening.

Bocconi University is a large urban university in the heart of Milan, which is a European business, financial and cultural hub, where history merges with modernity, and tradition with innovation. Bocconi reminds me of NYU, except the students are dressed better and the gelato is unbelievably tasty! Bocconi students have the luxury of a beautiful urban campus, located right next to an expansive park, and they are only 10 minutes from center city Milan. Walking around campus, I could easily tell that the students were serious about their academics, and had a thirst for a better understanding of the world around them. Italian and English were spoken interchangeably around me as I walked through the bustling outdoor cafes into their meticulously maintained school quads and hallways. As I learned more and more about the school itself, and the community that surrounded it, it became apparent that this was a perfect place for young adults willing to take the leap across the Atlantic Ocean, and see what the world has to offer.

Below are some facts and figures on Bocconi, including information on admissions and financial aid:

Facts and Figures

  • There are 14,062 students enrolled at Bocconi, including 2,130 international students
  • English speaking students can take all of their classes in English while studying at Bocconi if they choose
  • Bocconi partners with 275 leading schools in 54 countries worldwide to assist students in study abroad and internship opportunities
  • After graduation, 48.6% of graduates find jobs abroad (including the U.S.)

  • Bocconi University is primarily a business school, and was the first college in Italy to offer a degree in Economics. Their primary fields of study include: Management, Economics, Finance, Political Science, Data Science, International Economics & Management, International Economics & Finance, Economics & Social Science, Economics/Management & Computer Science, Economics & Management for Arts, Culture & Communication, and International Politics & Government
  • Students receive their degree in just THREE YEARS, saving a year of time and tuition, and gets the individual into the workforce!
Admissions and Financial Aid

  • The cost for one year for tuition, food, and fees is about 12,300 euros or $14,300. This does not include housing. As mentioned above, students receive their degree in just three years, as opposed to the American standard, four years
  • Bocconi also offers academic scholarships, which could reduce the price of tuition even more
  • For admissions, Bocconi (for American students) looks for an ACT of 29 or higher or a SAT of 1270 or higher, and at least three AP courses with scores of 3-5 on the exam. One of these APs can be substituted with a SAT Subject Test score of 560 or higher
  • As of now, students must apply on the Bocconi website
World Bachelor in Business Program

This is an extremely unique program that is a great opportunity for the highly motivated and independent student who wants to study around the world at three prestigious institutions. 50 students are enrolled into this program each year from all over the world...where they will study on three different continents. In the WBB program, students complete one year at USC in California, one year at Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, one year at Bocconi University, and the fourth year at any of the three schools they choose. WBB graduates are especially attractive candidates for jobs in international businesses and organizations. This is an extremely selective, yet amazing opportunity for the right young man or woman.

Final Thoughts
Studying at an International College is definitely not for everyone. You are in a very different environment and culture, and language can be an issue, and you are far from friends and family. However, college is meant to be a time to grow individually and experience a new way of life...not just to continue how you are living, while in high school. If you are someone who is open to studying internationally and if you are interested in business, I would highly recommend looking into Bocconi University. Pun intended, Bocconi means business...they have some of the best professors in the world, and their students are graduating prepared for the world, and attaining jobs in some of the leading companies in Europe, Asia, and the Americas. And for the parents reading this, nervous that their little Johnny will never come home, data is on your side, as the majority of American students who study at Bocconi return home to work after graduation...or at least somewhere in the USA. Overall, I loved my time at Bocconi, the city is remarkable, the campus is energizing, and the Bocconi community is a special place. Enjoy the search!
